SBIR 95-1 SOLICITATION
PROJECT SUMMARY
Proposal Number:
Project Title:
MEMBRANE FOR SELECTIVE REMOVAL OF AMMONIUM IONS FROM SPACECRAFT RECYCLED WATER
Technical Abstract:
This proposed program addresses the use of an ammonium ion-selective mem-
branes in a flow cell configuration to remove low levels of ammonium ions from
the effluent stream . Future extended manned space missions will require
regenerable life support systems utilizing bioreactors, plants and micro-
organisms for recycling water. Regenerative techniques are needed to remove
ammonium ion from bioreactor process effluent streams without generating
expendables. The concentrations occur in the range of 500 to less than 1 ppm.
The ammonium ion is generated as a decomposition product of urea and over time
will build in concentration, thus rendering the water unsuitable for human con-
sumption. In a self contained system such as a space shuttle recycling of all
water for human consumption will be primary to the success of long term missions.
The proposed program will address the removal of ammonium ion from effluent
streams without the co-production of expendables by using an ammonium ion
selective membrane in a two compartment electrodialysis cell. The ammonium ion
selective membrane was developed for use in an ion selective electrode.
Potential Commercial Applications:
