High Resolution Intensified Color Array for Electronic Still
Photography
Abstract:
Effective technology transfer for dual use application has emerged
as a critical National priority. One example is the drive toward
increasing resolution in commercial and scientific still
photography using megapixel arrays originally developed for
military missions. We propose to combine our expertise in image
intensified detector design with the significant capabilities of
the Eastman Kodak Company and apply them to the development of a
high resolution color system to be used for extended duration
spaceflight and exploration missions. Using the Kodak KAF 1400
focal plane array which has recently flown on the Space Shuttle, we
intend to produce an intensified version with color capability. The
inclusion of an amplification stage before the array dramatically
extends the low level response range. Innovative architecture and
incorporation of color filter mosaics, small pore MCPs and
optimized fiber interfaces can lead to a significant improvement
for space mission applications. With this goal in mind, Phase I and
Phase II represent stepping stones to demonstrate the concept and
develop a viable version of the compound detector for NASA. Phase
III commercial spin offs include surveillance, spectroscopy and
robotic control in low light level situations.
The development of an improved high resolution color detector
system based on the combination of megapixel focal plane arrays and
color image intensifiers will have an immediate impact in a wide
variety of research and commercial applications. Remote
sensing/surveillance, robotic imaging, low light level image
formation and spectroscopy are several examples of direct
commercial applications. The compound detector could be marketed as
a separate unit or be incorporated into various optical systems.
