Bipolar Silver Metal Hydride Battery
Abstract:
The silver metal hydride (Ag-MH) battery system offers the
potential of high energy density, sealed operation and safety for
manned space applications. Conventional silver-zinc (Ag-Zn)
batteries are only capable of 50-100 cycles before failure. The
object of this project is to develop the technology to build Ag-MH
batteries capable of hundreds of cycles and energy density greater
than 125 Wh/kg at the cell level and 100 Wh/kg at the battery
level, which would make this type of battery suitable
for manned space applications.
Electro Energy Inc. has successfully pioneered a bipolar nickel-
metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery. The bipolar design is patent
pending. This novel packaging approach along with optimized
components is proposed to demonstrate the viability of such a
system for space applications.
The main commercial application of this program would be in
the utilization of the metal hydride electrode and bipolar
batter,v packaging technology to other rechargeable batteries
whose potential applications range from portable appliances to
electric vehicles. Specialty small capacity commercial
applications for Ag-MH batteries will also exist in cases
where the expense of silver can be justified to achieve
reduced weight and volume products.
