Fiber Optic FTIR



TECHNICAL ABSTRACT (LIMIT 200 WORDS)

FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED EMISSION SPECTROMETRY (EMISSION FTIR) HAS BEEN A STANDARD METHOD FOR CHEMICAL ANALYSIS. EXISTING EMISSION FTIR SPECTROMETER IS LARGE, HEAVY AND POWER INTENSIVE. THIS PROGRAM SEEKS TO DEVELOP A MINIATURE, SENSITIVE, ROBUST, LOW POWER AND LOW COST FIBER OPTIC EMISSION FTIR FOR THE IN-SITU ANALYSIS OF COMPOUNDS OF BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE IN SPACE. A PROTOTYPE EMISSION FTIR WILL BE ASSEMBLED AND EVALUATED IN THIS PHASE I PROGRAM TO ESTABLISH THE PROOF-OF-CONCEPT



POTENTIAL COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
The proposed Fiber Optic FTIR will readily fit the following applications:
 NASA research in space
 Remote monitoring of gaseous pollutant emission
 Law enforcement on drugs
 Emergency response/removal to spills of toxic/hazardous chemicals
 Urban air quality monitoring
 On-line analysis for process control
 Detection and warning of chemical/biological warfare agents
