GeoBrowse: An Integrated Environment for Satellite Image Retrieval and Mining

INNOVATION
    GeoBrowse is an integrated software system for image retrieval, browsing and data mining. It supports “content based'' queries on large databases of remotely sensed images. Software architecture addresses obstacles facing analysts of remotely sensed data, such as scalability to massive datasets, open system design, and interoperability with other applications.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Automatic reduction of raster image information.
  • Flexible data mining queries expressed in an SQL-like language
  • Interface with ESRI products: SDE, ArcView®, and ARC/INFO®.
  • Integration of image analysis with raster data and GIS information.
  • Seamless interface with S-PLUS statistical data analysis engine and S-PLUS graphics.
  • Interface with relational database system.
COMMERCIALIZATION
  • GeoBrowse project resulted in a commercial software product called VisiMine.
  • VisiMine is marketed for analysis of satellite and medical images and in the consulting projects.
  • Decision tree visualization algorithms developed in the project were ported to the Insightful Miner product.
GOVERNMENT/SCIENCE APPLICATIONS
  • Based on construction of GeoBrowse, Insightful received NASA subcontract NAS5-01123, Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining based on Hierarchical Segmentation of Image Data, funded under the Information Systems program, NRA2-37143.
  • Technology developed during the project is used to develop new techniques for analyzing microscopic tissue image under NIH 2 R44 LM06520-02 “A Bayesian Textual and Information Retrieval Engine” contract.
