Self-Aligning Bearingless Planetary – SABP

Transmission Technology, Inc.

Lincoln Park, NJ

INNOVATION
Transmission concept has no planet bearings and carrier/s and is internally load balanced and self aligning
Transmission assembly and it’s installation in Helicopter Gear Box
Helicopter Transmission Assembly
and Partial View of Internal Components

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Designed, made, and successfully tested six prototype gear drives using SAPB gear arrangements
  • These modules were rated up to 500HP with input speeds up to 35,350 RPM and gear ratios of 7 to 1, 16 to 1, and 102 to 1 per module
  • Results of testing verified engineering analysis, demonstrated stability and viability of the gear drives without planet carriers and planet bearings, and showed significant performance improvements
COMMERCIALIZATION
  • This gear drive arrangement can be used in all non-angle gear drive applications where speed change of 6 to 1 or higher is required
  • As a result of a consulting arrangement with Transmission Technology, a commercial company developed and is  using SABP in off-highway vehicles
GOVERNMENT/SCIENCE APPLICATIONS
  • Numerous government applications can use SABP drives including various aircraft/helicopter transmissions, main propulsion gearing for ships and submarines, as well as ship and submarine steering
  • Can be used in various science and outer space projects that require a multitude of gear drives
