INNOVATION
Development of a wind power system
for the generation of electricity which must operate under extreme environmental
conditions such as those encountered at the South Pole or in the Martian
atmosphere

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Has designed and installed a
prototype direct drive wind turbine at the NSF Anartica McMurdo
Station
|
COMMERCIALIZATION
- The results of the Phase II
work has attracted the attention of the Department of Energy (DOE)
and the National Science Foundation for application in small villages
throughout Northern Alaska. Consequently, the DOE has given
a contract to Northern for $600K to build an advanced generator
for the system. In addition, the DOE is expected to issue a series
of Phase III contracts for over $3M to design, build, and test several
prototypes specifically for Alaskan conditions

APPLICATIONS
- Prototype installations of wind
turbine in Alaskan Village of Kotzebue is progressing
