Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program
2000 SBIR Phase 2
Additional Award Selection Announcement: February 13, 2002
NASA SELECTS NINE INNOVATIVE SMALL BUSINESS PROJECTS
NASA has selected nine research proposals for negotiation
of Phase 2 contract awards for its 2000 Small Business Innovation
(SBIR) Program.
Phase 2 continues development of the most promising
previously selected Phase 1 projects. Selection criteria include
scientific and technical merit, future importance and eventual value
of the innovation to NASA, company capabilities and commercial potenital.
Funding for Phase 2 contracts may be up to $600,000 for a two-year
performance period. The combined award total for the nine Phase
2 contracts is expected to be $5.4 million.
The goals of the NASA SBIR Program are to stimulate
technological innovation, increase the use of small business (including
women-owned and disadvantaged firms) in meeting federal research
and development needs, and increase private sector commercialization
of results of federally funded research. Two of the nine companies
being announced today are disadvantaged firms and one is women-owned.
A total of 259 proposals was submitted by SBIR contractors
completing Phase 1 projects. These proposals were evaluated to determine
that they met SBIR Phase 1 objectives and are feasible research
innovation for meeting agency needs. 126 proposals were previously
selected on November 20, 2001 (ref. Press Release 01-223). Due to
funding availability, an additional nine proposals are being selected
at this time.
The NASA SBIR Program Management Office is located
at the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, with executive
oversight by NASA's Office of Aerospace Technology. Individual SBIR
projects are managed by NASA's field centers.
